Consolidating and Diversifying Sustainable Forest Management Certification in Myanmar – A New Project Supported by Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation

From May 2017 to April 2020 the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation funded a PEFC and MFCC collaborative project in Myanmar. The project, ‘Working in Partnership to Bring Sustainable Management to Myanmar’s Forests”, aimed to support ongoing reform process in Myanmar’s forest sector with a clear focus on delivering a national forest certification system.

Since May 2021 the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation has been supporting a second phase of work through a new project: “Consolidating and Diversifying Sustainable Forest Management Certification in Myanmar”. This new phase, which will run until April 2024, and builds on the previous collaboration. It aims to maintain momentum, and further develop forestry sector certification systems in Myanmar, along with the institutional mechanisms that underpin them. There will be a series of project specific capacity development activities, along with interventions to diversify SFM certification in areas such as smallholder certification and certification of rubber and/or trees outside forests.

During the first project MFCC saw a significant increase in its stakeholder base. This second phase will help MFCC to expand its engagement activities and cement its position as a leading source of expertise and partnership in the Southeast Asia region. Partnership development and collaboration are central to this latest project. Key partners include national networks of Myanmar, regional and International NGOs with an environmental focus, the private sector and Government. This new phase will also continue to add value to a number of ongoing initiatives and planned activities related to the Myanmar forestry sector. These include teak and SFM related projects planned though ITTO, UNREDD, the World Bank and ASEAN.
